After an extensive 6 month refit, this Ron Holland designed 90ft true performance world cruiser has been upgraded by the team at Holland Jachtbouw with a new engine and an upgraded engine room. Her hull, mast and boom have been re-painted and she now benefits from an extra guest cabin, converted from the study along with a fully remodeled master cabin. Her steering helm was also relocated from the main to the aft cockpit and she now has the added comfort of a newly designed bimini and dodger and full replacement of all soft-furnishings, inside and out.

As the champagne struck her hull, she was re-named Wavelength by her owners who will now enjoy a summer of cruising onboard their newly transformed yacht.

The owner of Rainbow, along with Tako van Ineveld, Commercial Director at Holland Jachtbouw, Jeroen de Vos from Dykstra Naval Architects and Michiel de Vos from DeVosDeVries Design were presented with the trophy which has become synonymous with excellence in superyacht build and design.

Hosted by Boat International and held once again at the spectacular Ciragan Palace in Istanbul, the ceremony – dubbed the Oscars of the superyacht industry, was attended by an elite guest list of international superyacht owners and the most influential players in the industry.

For the last two decades HJB has been distinguished by a no-nonsense, proactive approach to innovative custom projects, and Rainbow was no exception. The highly talented engineering team developed a unique Hybrid Propulsion System to meet the owner's specifications for an environmentally friendly yacht which will hopefully lead the way in the future of superyachts.

HJB in the Caribbean

4hjb-carib2
Holland Jachtbouw was well-represented in the recent Caribbean Regattas. Athos and Carl Linne competed at the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous hosted by the YCCS in Virgin Gorda, BVI. Carl Linne proved herself to be a wolf in sheep's clothing, leading the fleet on the second day of racing until close to the finish; unfortunately a torn spinnaker on the 3rd day destroyed any chance of a podium place. Athos raced extremely well and finished 2nd overall in her class.

The following week saw Athos and Rainbow racing in the St Barth's Bucket. Rainbow competed against 4 other J's in their own class, a very spectacular and unique sight!

YIII

Construction is now well underway of this sleek 45m high performance sloop which has been designed by Bill Dixon with an interior from the boards of Rhoades Young Design. The yacht was commissioned by a repeat client who has enjoyed many years sailing on his current HJB yacht.

Designed to do very well in the light airs of the Mediterranean, the yacht will include a number of special features. Highlights include a fully automatic bimini and dodger, a double hinging transom door/swim platform, and a telescopic lifting keel that has been designed in such a way that it will not interfere with the interior layout. Launching is on schedule for spring 2014.

J8

The J Class revival of the 21st century continues to gather pace with 5 J's racing in this year's Superyacht regattas at St Barth's, Palma and Porto Cervo. Leveraging on our most recent experiences with Rainbow, HJB currently have J8 in build. Originally designed by Frank Paine in the 1930's but never built, Andre Hoek - responsible for the re-design of Lionheart which has proved to be a spectacular performer at the J Class regattas, and his innovative team at Hoek Design embarked on an extensive research project to find the best performing J Class yacht and identified J8 as one of the best. When she is completed she will have the longest waterline of any J afloat and will be an exceptionally strong competitor on the regatta circuit. She will be fitted with the same Hybrid Propulsion System as Rainbow. J8 is now for sale through the yard and her future owner could be participating in the J Class regattas as soon as summer 2014! Launched in 2005 by HJB, this timeless Hoek Design 41m luxury schooner returned to the shipyard in January for a well-earned refit. Designed to be the perfect family cruising and charter yacht, she has spent the last few years taking her owners around the globe, but has also proved herself to be a favourite on the regatta circuit due to her lightweight, high-performance hull, carbon mast and sophisticated lifting keel. She won the 2012 St Barth's Bucket, no mean feat considering she was up against some of the most spectacular Superyachts in the world. She is due to be re-launched at the end of 2013.

Boo Too

8bootoo
Designed by Ron Holland and launched in 2002 by Pendennis Shipyard, Boo Too arrived at HJB in November 2012 for an extensive refit. The steering helm will also be relocated, and her hull, mast and rigging will be serviced and re-painted. The finishing touch will be complete replacement of the soft furnishings, inside and out. Re-launch is scheduled for May 2013.

Hybrid results: Rainbow generates power

4hybridrot
After an extensive summer season racing in the J-Class events, Monaco Yacht Show and cruises around St. Tropez, Rainbow crossed the Atlantic and is in full swing for the Caribbean season. Crossing the Atlantic was Rainbow's first opportunity to test the last component of the Hybrid Power System; power regeneration from sailing.

As one of the most interesting parts of the Hybrid Power System, Rainbow is equipped with a 50kW shaft generator/electric motor. We already had great results driving Rainbow in full silent mode on her electric propulsion system. Doing 7kn on just batteries is an extraordinary experience.

Rainbows delivery to the Caribbean was a great opportunity to test the power generating part for a longer period of time and to see whether Rainbow would be self-foreseeing concerning onboard energy consumption. It turned out that with Rainbow's boat speed up to 9 – 10 kn reaching along, the Hybrid Power System was capable of delivering enough electric power to all on board systems and even was charging the batteries.

Power regenerating systems onboard sailing yachts is a great advantage, especially on longer voyages where fuel consumption is a key issue. It will extend the range of the boat or even be completely self–foreseeing. But please keep in mind, power never comes for free, but sailors know how to find it.
