The spectacular 39.95m yacht Rainbow has been designed by naval architects Dykstra & Partners, taking as their template the J-Class from the boards of William Starling Burgess. Completed in 1934 the original Rainbow won the America’s cup against Endeavour but was broken up in 1940. This new version will join a next generation fleet of J-Class yachts when launched in 2011, including Ranger and Hanuman (replica of Endeavour II).
Like her counterparts, Rainbow will be a stunning looking vessel created to compete against the other J’s. Her performance potential is being optimised in line with the rules of the J-Class Association. Rainbow is being built in aluminium, combining a lightweight construction with a high degree of overall stiffness, high-modulus carbon spars, carbon rigging, 3DL sails and hydraulic winches. All modern functional requirements will be integrated with full respect for the yachts’ heritage.
The decks will be kept as clean and as flush as possible. Rainbow’s interior will have a 1930s styling, offering superior comfort to eight guests and eight crew members.
Special attention will be made to the “greening” of the Rainbow. Reduction of the “demand” by several technical arrangements will save about 20% of the energy production needed. Combined with a hybrid power system Rainbow will be the ‘greenest’ boat of the fleet.
